YES WE CAN HAS!

// Are you registered to vote? /

If you are eligible to vote, most places you only have until the end of this week to register to do so. Also, most places you can even do it online. This is the time when parties do tactical purges and blocks (YES, BOTH of the parties). Check and make sure your address is current, and grab a preview of your ballot.

BELIEVE IT OR NOT the ballot has more options than just "President", and your vote carries MORE weight for the lines that aren't "President". I don't care if you bother to fill out the top line at all, but don't reduce voting to just picking sides in a national choice of evils. Quality of life is very much an issue of local voting, and if you cop out on that, you're only hurting YOURSELF.

Handy dandy reference link:

THIS WILL BE ON THE TEST.

Thanks for this! Hey, do you have any idea how I could find out if and where I'm currently registered to vote? When I moved in August and changed my address with the DMV, I checked the box saying I'd like to change the address where I'm registered to vote as well. But I haven't gotten any kind of confirmation, or a sample ballot in the mail, and I'm starting to freak out.

Sorry to dump you with my crazy question. I figured it was worth a shot.

I'm not sure, outside of calling your registrar. In WA they have a super nifty system where you put in your first & last name and DOB and it tells you if and where you're registered, active, and you can even click to see your local ballot.

http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/elections_vr.htm might have a lead?

A few links away from the the CA Secretary of State website:

Voter Registration Status Lookup for San Francisco County.

In case things aren't all hunky-dory, the CA SoState site suggested contacting them directly for further direction:

Purges: http://www.brennancenter.org/content/resource/voter_purges

It's downplayed as a whiny reactionary issue, but it's been common practice my whole life at least, and with how close some election issues run these days it's big enough to make a piece of the difference.

Along with dead people voting, people making calls or doing mailings to misdirect people to the wrong polling place, and people sending out filled-out sample ballots designed to be deceptive (like with a conservative church's name on the top, all party affiliations removed, but all democratic choices bubbled - or vice versa with a League of Women Voters label, etc). It's really bad behaviour all around. :/

I am registered to vote and I am encouraging people to show up and vote even if they don't care about the Presidental race, because at least in Calfornia there's that whole PROP 8 thing that I'm making sure people know about.
