I google mapped the house I grew up in. It's still there, along with the rest of the neighborhood, nestled between lakes and more lakes, but now, everywhere that used to be forest-padding between the chains of middle-class suburban oversized lots, there's strip malls, apartments, condos, squeezed into every space where once I played and made mischief. There are 4-plus lane roads where I remember the pavement giving way to dirt where I used to ride my bike. The skating rink is long, long gone. Twenty years is a long time.
