$210 (free shipping) for a 1TB Seagate Free Agent Pro. Upside, you don't have to buy an external case. Downside, orange light rather than blue, and it's fanless, so I couldn't in good conscience advise it for continuous use like the last-gen Seagate externals. But if you need to back up the TB you bought the other month, it's a great deal*. Keep in mind Buy.com sometimes sells out very fast on their weekly deals.

Angyl sez, thumbs-up!

* Not as great as the $150 750G FreeagentPro w/USB/Firewire/eSATA I picked up from Frys.com the other week, but that was part hack and it sold out by the time I got my order confirmation.

I think it's gonna be naptime soon!

This is the drive I have. I use it at work every day and it doesn't get very hot. I would definitely recommend it to others.

It's a very very Shiny drive, with a lot of great detail touches. But in my setup, I have drives that sit on my network and sometimes might be working for HOURS on end, moving hundreds of gigs, and for that sort of purpose I can never endorse passive cooled drives, no matter how well-cooled, unless you're there to touch them every hour and make sure they're still ok. Excessive heat kills drives dead. But for your (and most people's) use patterns, it should be just fine, and modern passive cooling is vastly superior to years-ago models. Also, fans are pretty much always noisy, even the quiet ones can be heard. They've moved the "ugly workhorse" division to the Maxtor line now, but I don't know if that line has the QA quality the seagate line has, waiting for more reports.
