YES WE CAN HAS!

I want to see a place-tagger/location social microblog. Like Twitter, but tied to a place, not a person. From there, there's like a million value-add possibilities, but I just think it'd be cool to be somewhere and iPhone up what people before me had to say about it while they were there.

Like this?

Granted, I don't think it's plugged into FireEagle (Yahoo's location brokerage service) yet.

Also Dopplr has a similar feature, but not as fine-grained as you're asking. They just have it for cities.

Just like Yelp only has it for commercial entities.

Yeah, a Yelp/Twitter hybrid thing was pretty much what I was thinking of, maybe with the ability to browse say up and down the block from where you are, or the ability to stream what people are saying about your coffee shop right now to a marquee on the wall Let me know when there's a real competitor out there?

It's a cool idea. I keep thinking of graffiti on bathroom stalls, or grouting though ;). And I think there's already precedent for the use case, without good integration.

Send me an email (see LJ profile) with more thoughts on this. Biz model sounds like splitting users into free + ads & pro subscription with value adds is what you're imagining.

Ad model is stale. Might work on a biz.prop. right now, but in the future I'm imagining something that taps the social network harder, not sure what sort of framework would need to be in place to make it work. So like, say I'm blogging about the awesome coffee at the shop I'm sitting in. Some future framework would parse the post I'm about to make and note that I'm praising ABC coffee. ABC coffee has a B2G1F coupon they might have normally sent in the paper locl press that everyone throws out these days. When I post, I have the option to link to that B2G1F coupon, which my friend Joe can pull up on his phone when he shows up tomorrow with his 2 friends. Something tracks me as the referral link, and I get a free coffee after 10 people have used the coupon. This is the kind of model we're going to need with the upandcoming generation, because they HATE advertisers but they're slaves to what their friends say is cool. Did that make sense?

Also, while I don't mention Yelp! much, it's totally a "killer app" for me and I use it very frequently. How is it over the pond?

Nobody uses Yelp or Craigslist over here. Quite a few crappy Yelp-wannabes, and Gumtree is the closest to a Craigslist they've got here, but still hardly any use for both.

And it's not an untapped market, as much as it is an untappable market, because the telecom industry has erected a huge barrier to internet use by setting up the offers ("tariffs") so they all have data limits. 1GB, 3GB, 5GB, 7GB caps per month bullshit. Haven't seen the actual penetration numbers for proportion of pop with broadband at home, but I suspect it's comparatively low. In Central fucking London, only 1 in every 20 cafes offers free wifi.

There's clearly demand, as the Apple store has full terminal saturation at almost any time of day, sometimes with people hovering to wait to use the macs.

I'm gonna talk to some of my friends about the feasibility of building what you're asking for.

Wow, so do people just not 'net much, or do they use their phones or do it at work? What's taking the place of that niche?

They're pre-occupied by their hatred for the monarchy and their near-absolute lack of democracy, which they talk about over a few ales at any of the million pubs they frequent (their "local").

Wait, so people actually talk, like with other people in the same place as them? That's crazy.

I know! I couldn't believe it either.

(Hey, I was trained as a scientist. I literally call it like I see it.)
