YES WE CAN HAS!
Tue, Dec. 30th, 2008 06:31 am

PNG just let me sleep for nearly 8 hours in a row, and woke me up by snuggling up to me rather than barking frantically. Our little boy is growing up!

In a couple hours, when they're open, I think I will go get a crack waffle to celebrate.

Getting really sick of the snow now.

Puppy got worms, poor little guy. Hans picked up some de-wormer, so PNG should stop pooping spaghetti some time soon.

Puppy is 12 pounds now - that's twice as big as when we brought him home. He's also really looking like a proper Keeshond now, so much so that I'm surprised at least once a day at how little he is - my brain keeps wanting to think he's a fullsize Kee viewed from farther away than I actually am. He's generally much less bratty now, the nomming is largely under control, and he knows "sit", "down", and "wait", as well as "sit/wait" when I open the door (though sometimes he cheats). He leash-walks as well as could be expected for a puppy his age, and he's getting better at dealing with distractions like other people/dogs. He's learning "get it!", "bring it here", "give it", and "find your toy". I think we'll work on some combination of roll over, jump, stand up, spin, and/or shake next. He's still Very Bad at "come" when he doesn't want to, and he won't be allowed to play off-leash until he gets that down SOLID, so we still have a lot of work to do in the next 2 months. After the new year he'll be old enough for puppy kindergarten, which should really help with the obedience under distracting conditions thing, as well as socializing with other dogs.

Utter snowpocalypse! 6"+ deep in some places, and still coming down. Many vehicles stranded, including Hans's - he got stranded here last night and actually walked from my place in Roosevelt to the Greenhaus where he has clothes and computers and such today - what a stud! I walked puppy around 2.5 miles in it, and now he's BEAT. And so am I. Looks like it might not get warm enough to clear up until Xmas. O TEH DRAMA! However, power and internets are holding up, and I have cheese and coffee and boozahol, and we will survive.

Well, you know, eventually.

Now that everything is covered in ice and snow and is brittle, it's the perfect time for a weekend-long windstorm.

K THX THAT'S ENUFF NOW WEATHER.

At least I have plenty of coffee.

Look at this coat on this little guy. The snow collects on the outside, and just serves to keep the inside even more warm. It dries out super fast too. The hard part is getting him to come back inside!

Png seems to be improving, so I'm betting it was something he ate, probably the bone. Next week I'll let him have it for a very short time, after he's had a full proper meal, and see what happens there. He's probably lacking something to digest the bone stuff, but Gif was able to nom smoked bones and even raw shanks in very small amounts without his system going crazy, so I'll give it one more try, and if that doesn't work I'll prolly put it in the fridge and try again when he's a little older and his system is a little more developed, just because he loved it so much.

Today he socialized with a lot of people and was generally a good boy. He hasn't topped 3 piddles a day inside for several days now, and even his icky poos were done outside, so now it's mostly just a matter of waiting for his bladder control to improve as he grows up. He's okay with me being in other rooms about half the time now, though he still has his crazy-clingy moments. He's crying less when I crate him for the night, and I can sometimes slip outside for short periods without him going crazy. He's got 'sit' about halfway down, but he hasn't yet had that AH-HA moment where they realize some words are Commands and they mean Actions and when you do them you are Good (and sometimes get Cookies). He's leash-walking for me quite well, but he's still misbehaving for other people so we need to work on that, or maybe start working on 'heel' early. Overall he's doing impressively well for a two-month-old.

And now he's zonked out under my chair so maybe I can get some laundry done before bed!

OH AND ALSO, he makes "OMG I'll die if I don't get some of that!" noises over COFFEE. From the moment I grind the beans until I finish the coffee, he NEEDS it. I've never given him any. He's weird.

Png has an upset tummy, and I am in paranoid mom mode. I don't see anything that makes me need to take him to the vet, but I think he needs coddling and to not get overstimulated. The ham bone he loved so much may or may not be a culprit here, will have to do more scientific testing next week.

Poor little guy :(

Png now more or less potties on command. Like to the extent that I don't say the P-word inside because a couple of times he's piddled mere seconds after I said the word. Now it's "Do you want to go outside?" and then once outside I use the P-word. This isn't just true of piddles, but also applies to number two. He's figured out that he needs to run around a bit to get the poo out, so when I ask him to poo he sometimes runs himself around a bit first.

My Kesshond is smarter than your honors student.

Someone seekritly replaced my demon puppy with a sweet little lap-puppy that noms mostly what he's supposed to, potties outside, and wants lots of belly rubs and naps.

I don't expect this to last, but it's wonderful.

It's really Nifty watching him differentiate more from a generic puppy blob into proper keeshond features, and seeing his little brain learn coordination and control of his little body.

Meanwhile, since getting back from the road trip, I can count on my fingers the number of Tasks I've gotten done. I still haven't even really started setting up the new Macbook, much less packing up loads for Greenhaus, or even finishing the laundry I made on road trip. But, Hans is taking Png to Mud Bay to get more toys and nomthings tonight, so hopefully I can GTD for a bit then. Or maybe just make dinner and watch a movie without having to be hyper-aware all the time.

Keys to keeping the alien under control:

- Several different toys in every room of the house. At the least, each room needs a nomstick and something fuzzy, so he can be redirected to the right toy depending on what he was incorrectly nomming on.
- Cookies and poo-bags should be in your pockets at all times, and each room needs a clean rag towel.
- Puppies that go out of your sight _will_ either piddle or damage something. Keep them closed in whatever room you're in.
- You have about 30 seconds between puppy letting you know he needs to pee and him peeing, if you're lucky enough to get warning. Therefore you can never do anything that you can't walk away from at 5 seconds' notice while puppy is awake. Hence, doing 15 minutes worth of dishes can take about an hour.
- Going outside every 2 hours, even if it means waking him up, for potty, will teach him proper bathroom behavior, and reduce the number of times you need to clean up messes.
- Long walks, even in the rain, to tire him out. A tired puppy is a cute puppy. A wired puppy is an evil alien.
- Puppies only have about 7 hours a day of wired in them, distributed through 12 hours, leaving you with just enough time to wash the towels and feed yourself. (Still trying to figure out how to work daily showers back into my schedule.)
- Constantly remind yourself that this isn't forever, that he WILL grow up, and that the work you're doing now will make him an easy to live with adult dog.
- He's REALLY lucky that he's so cute.

''Disqualifying every gay Floridian from raising a family, enjoying grandchildren or carrying on the family name, based on nothing more than lawful sexual conduct, while assuring child abusers, terrorists, drug dealers, rapists and murderers at least individualized consideration, `` Audlin wrote, was so ``disproportionately severe'' that it violates the state and U.S. Constitutions.

In her ruling, Lederman said children taken into state care have a ''fundamental'' right to be raised in a permanent adoptive home if they cannot be reunited with birth parents. Children whose foster parents are gay, she said, can be deprived of that right under the current law.

''The challenged statute, in precluding otherwise qualified homosexuals from adopting available children, does not promote the interests of children and, in effect, causes harm to the children it is meant to protect,'' Lederman wrote.

The judge added: ``There is no question the blanket exclusion of gay applicants defeats Florida's goal of providing [foster] children a permanent family through adoption.''

He had a poo, so I decided to let him follow me around and nap at my feet rather than crate him for now. Gif had clingy anxiety at first, but he got over it pretty fast when I let him follow me around so he knew I wasn't leaving him when I went in the other room. I think he'll be easier to crate when I'm not fighting separation anxiety too. It's slowly helping him de-clingy; he'll let me leave the room without following half the time now.

How long can this crazy manicness last in Teh Darque before I succumb to some dreary plague of doom? I hope we won't find out.

Today the furnace was re-fixed (free), and I got a new MacBook battery (free), possibly closing off two problems I've been working on for weeks. Had to detour to pick up the cashier's check for puppy. Also into moving stuff around from the garage to better locations. Finally, we put together some of our Ikea bookshelves. It doesn't seem like all that much when I type it out, but I was running another 12-hour GTD day, and it's not over yet.

Now I am trying to get two loads of laundry and dishes done before I go to bed, to sleep not enough hours before I make a phonecall at OMGWTF AM then nap a bit more than have breakfast, get puppy, go puppy supply shopping, and try to tire puppy out while Hans is swinging his sword around. Then we need to get a dehumidifier from Sears for the basement. Then feed the puppy, feed us, and figure out where puppy is going to spend the night. I'll need to come back to Roosevelt to pay bills and do more laundry and hopefully pack up more stuff to take to greenhaus.

Sunday I need to do the errands I was supposed to be doing Saturday, so Hans will be in charge of the puppy for the afternoon. I also hope to get in some slacking, because I need it sooooooo bad.

Monday & Tuesday will be packing & prepping & doing whatever last-minute things so I can leave for Cali at OMGWTF AM Wednesday. I still do not know where I am staying that night - Claire, did you ask your parents if I can crash with you guys? If not, it'll be with AJT, and I'll be heading back to Seattle on Saturday after a brief stop in SF. (If I can crash with Claire AND the puppy is taking travel well, I MIGHT stay Saturday night with AJT, which would give me Saturday afternoon and evening to be social-with-puppy, but since it's very tentative I'm not scheduling it, so I don't have to cancel on anyone. Watch my LJ/Twitter for updates later in the week.)

I am pretty much all booked up for my Bay visit, and I send my deepest apologies to the majority of you, that I never even tried to schedule in. Hans and I will stop by the Heaton Thanksgiving after we finish at the Andersen one. I am not sure if it would be a good idea to bring puppy to that tho, so you may have to walk to the Andersens to see him. Friday during the day I have stuff to do with Hans, and then I have RL people to visit in Santa Cruz area - as well as a Very Necessary trip to the Sock Shop. I hopefully intend to go to coffee pudding on Friday evening, maybe with puppy, so those of you in PA/MtnView may want to meet up with me there if you are able. I know, there are a lot of maybes here, but I have to run a lot of things by ear depending on how the puppy is handling things.

Applestore called, Fu is fixed and ready. What was wrong? Well, here's what they replaced:

- fan
- both RAM chips
- logic board

This is the same system they completely replaced a month after I got it. Yeah, AppleCare FTW. Off to go pick it up and see how much better it works once I eat and coffee.

Also, greenhaus now has a working washer and dryer. Yay!

Also, greenhaus's furnace is leaking after all, boo! I'm trying to get a discounted repair deal since the original furnace guy didn't catch it.

I feel like such a drama queen today.<elektra>THERE IS NO GOD!</elektra>

I slept a WHOLE LOT and now I feel MUCH BETTER. I think I was forgetting that my need for sleep seriously ramps up in the winter, and my body pays the price quickly if I neglect that.

Also, the $$$$ electrical job turned into a $$$ job, and basically all the remaining issues I definitely need to address on the house this winter are all related to water and drainage, and once I fix that we'll be in excellent shape to proceed with cosmetics. It is really going super, it's costing a lot less to fix all the big issues than I had anticipated, which means we'll have some real good buffer for the things that will inevitably come in over budget.

I either need a greenhaus icon or to set up a side blog for it. It feels like it's taking over my LJ.

Earlier today, it was dark, cold, and raining. Much like it is right now. I had just popped back to the house to pick up another load for the new house. I was walking around hauling things, and came across one of my neighbors, a sweet and snarky old lady. We were both bouncy and humming songs, not even in raincoats, oblivious to the wet and gloom.

me: "Wonderful day, isn't it?"
her: "Any day where you wake up is a wonderful day!"
me: "Exactly!"

I'm gonna miss my neighbors.

"SEATTLE -- Crowds danced in the streets, wept, lifted their voices in prayer and brought traffic to a standstill.

Barack Obama's historic win sent his supporters pouring out into the streets of Seattle on Tuesday night, where they celebrated their candidate's win.

An estimated crowd of 3,500 spilled into the streets near the Pike Place Market and on Capitol Hill Tuesday night. Perfect strangers were hugging and giving high-fives. Fireworks were going off, and people were crowd surfing.

But police say the scene was very peaceful, and when the party began to wane, people grabbed brooms and starting sweeping up the mess, with officers thanking them as they drove through.

Seattle police spokeswoman Renee Witt says there were no incidents or arrests."

From two states over, I haven't seen a whole lot of the advertisements for/against prop 8. But of the things I've seen, there's one big thing I think could have been handled a lot better by the "No on 8" crowd, and that is allowing the issue to be primarily compared to racism and the civil rights struggle.

The thing is, it's actually much more closely related to the religious persecution struggle. Even at the surface level, race is something you can't closet. Even if you change your name, your skin color and phenotype isn't going to change, unless maybe you're Michael Jackson. Let's drop the debate of if sexual preference is something one can "choose" or not, because even if it is, we're still closer to religion in this issue. You can "choose" your religion, and convert from one to another. And your religion doesn't show on your person, unless you choose to make it so by wearing a prayer shawl or a big cross or some other outward symbol of your affiliation. Gayness can also be closeted. Your boss with the ring on his finger, your trusted auto mechanic, even your child could be gay and you'd never know unless they told you or you somehow "caught" them practicing.
